Mongolia 2008 – Update 2008 – 01

Stoves and tents.
We have
been in touch with Chris and Sarol in Mongolia – they have a number of
stoves and tents that we can use for the journey phases of the
expedition. This means that you will no longer need to buy group stoves
and tents for the expedition if you don’t wish to. Those of you who
wanted to buy tent and stoves anyway, this is perfectly OK, as long as
they meet the requirements we discussed on the last training weekend.
Having kit in Mongolia will help logistically and should save us all a
bit of money in the end as well.

Sleeping bags
– our recommendation for the expedition is to get a 3 or 4 season down
sleeping bag ideally. Or any other 3 or 4 season sleeping bag –
provided they are a true 3 or 4 season rating. You can expect to pay
upwards of £200 for the proper sleeping bag, so shop around for the
best bargains.

Passport Photos
am still awaiting many passport photos. So far I have Alex’s, Will’s
and Linzi’s, but an awaiting the rest. Apologies if you have sent it
and I haev not received it. We will soon be sorting the final details
out for these, so I need them asap please. The flight itineraries will
be finalised towards the end of February when the MIAT itinerary is
released. We will then decide whether to go via Moscow or Berlin. More
information at the next training weekend on this.

Duke of Edinburgh
the majority of you who are using the expedition as a means of being
assessed for the expedition and OAP part of the gold award will be well
on the way to organising this with your Dof E contacts. It is really
important that they understand that the processes we need to go through
for D of E assessment are very different to UK based expeditions, and
this means we fall into the YET code of practice for overseas
expeditions, and will meet BS8848 which is the new standard set for
this. This means that we have completed all risk and environmental
assessments for the expedition, as well as all other criteria for the
YET approval. Should they wish to see a copy of any of our paperwork,
that is not a problem – all I need is an email address and what they
want to see. It is all in word format.

New Member
are awaiting the payment of the deposit for a last member to make our
numbers up to 18. Liz Waterhouse should be joining us for the next
training weekend and I will distribute her contact details when it is
all finalised.

March 1st and 2nd Training Weekend
This is being organised as we speak and can expect an email about waht this entails and what you need beforehand soon.
